Add MCP servers and Skills

On this page

Add an MCP server when an Agent needs extra tools or service connections. Add a Skill when you want to reuse instructions and resources for a kind of work. Noea manages these extensions centrally for regular chats across Agents.

Extensions are optional: you do not need them to start. Explain and organization tasks do not use extensions added here.

A server's availability also depends on whether the Agent supports its connection method. For Skill commands, use the list actually shown in the chat.

Add an MCP server

Open Settings → MCP Servers, add a server, enter a name, and choose its connection method.

  • stdio: start a service locally. Enter its command, arguments, and required environment variables, with one argument per line.
  • HTTP: connect to a service by URL. Enter its server address and any required headers.

If the service supplies compatible JSON configuration, use Paste JSON to populate the form. Check the command, address, and authentication fields before saving.

Names must be unique, ignoring case. Names beginning with noea are reserved. The first row is Noea's built-in server, which is always enabled and cannot be deleted.

Test the connection

Test Connection in the edit panel uses the current form values. Testing from the list uses the saved configuration.

A successful test shows tool names and their count. A failure identifies the stage, such as a missing command, process exit, timeout, rejected request, or failed handshake. If an HTTP service requires authorization, follow the selected Agent's authorization flow.

A successful test means the configuration can connect. It does not guarantee every Agent supports it, and does not automatically enable the server for a chat.

Enable a server for a chat

The server list's default-for-new-chats setting determines the initial selection. You can also choose MCP servers for a particular chat in its configuration menu.

The choice is saved with the chat. A connected Agent does not immediately reload changed settings; they take effect on its next connection. To use a new configuration, start a new chat and check the server selection.

The menu explains why a server is unavailable, such as a missing environment variable or unsupported connection method.

Use environment variables

Environment-variable and header values support ${VAR} references to variables in Noea's runtime environment. Values are read when connecting. Test the connection after configuration. Running export in one terminal does not guarantee an already-running Noea process has that value.

Fields hide values by default and can reveal them on click. Hiding a value only keeps it from being displayed; it does not change how the configuration is saved or used.

Add a Skill

Open Settings → Skills, choose the add action, and select a folder containing SKILL.md. The app explains any format problems.

The Skill is added to Noea's library. Additions and removals take effect in new chats. You can reveal its location in the file manager. Deleting it removes the library copy, not the original folder you selected.

The same page shows read-only user-level and project-level Skills discovered in Agent directories. View their locations or choose Copy to Noea. This list does not include all Skills built into Agents or supplied by their plugins.

Use extensions in a chat

Start a new chat and type / at the beginning of the input to browse Noea Skills and Agent commands. Select an available item, add the requirements for the current task, and send.

If an extension is missing, check that you started a new chat and that the Agent supports it, then see Troubleshooting.
